DIBRUGARH: An accident that caused the death of three women triggered the anger of the local people leading to the burning down of a police vehicle. The incident took place in the Dibrugarh district of Assam on the night of Monday.

According to the ground reports, a speeding Swift Dzire vehicle bearing registration number AS06Z 3501 ran over three women on the night of Monday. The incident took place at a bypass near the Nahartoli locality that falls under the Dikom police station. The women were workers of the Nahartoli tea estate of Dibrugarh and their identities were revealed as Rita Bhakta, Sunita Bedia and Mina Bedia respectively.

Following the incident, agitated members of the tea garden blockaded the important road and caused a massive disruption in traffic movement. The blockade continued for several hours. The police tried to disperse the angry mob in Dikhom but faced stiff opposition as the protestors even torched a police vehicle.

Superintendent of Police for Dibrughar, Shwetak Mishra said, "The Swift Dzire ran over three women when they were passing through the bypass. The car was overseeing and due to this, the accident took place.”

Finally, the police forces resorted to firing blank rounds in order to disperse the angry mob. A case has already been registered regarding the incident and an investigation has been started.

Previously, a bus carrying pilgrims fall into a ditch at Rangjuli under Assam's Goalpara district on Saturday, inflicting at least 27 persons with severe injuries. The bus was travelling from West Bengal to Guwahati to visit the Kamakhya Temple when it lost control and crashed into a ditch by the side of the road. Despite the fact that 27 of them had critical injuries, reports said there were no fatalities. No details were given regarding the cause of the accident being a mechanical problem or a human error.
